Kerchief Headband

We are dreaming of Spring over here at The Muddy Princess, so I thought I would share this really cute kerchief headband I made for my daughter.
There wasn't much sewing involved in the making of this headband, because this craft started with a doggy kerchief!  Yes, you heard me, a doggy kerchief!  I found a few of these on clearance a while ago at Target for less than $1 and knew exactly what I wanted to do with them.

I started by using my seam ripper to remove the threading from the end pieces where the velcro is.  Turns out, this was one long strip inside the casing.  I decided to keep that long piece and maybe make a simple headband out of that as well.

Next, I just slipped a plain plastic headband through the casing of the kerchief and added a dab of hot glue on each end to keep it in place.  Ta Da - instant kerchief headband!

I was able to make two of these, but as you can see, my headband model wasn't in the mood for trying on one new headband, let alone two.  But, I think it turned out really cute and was SO easy to make!  Be sure to check every clearance endcap at Target - you never know what you might find!

Heart Hair

Before I got my daughter's hair cut, it was pretty long.  And last year, she allowed me to play with her hair.  For Valentine's Day, we made these cute heart hair styles, thanks to some inspiration from The Story of a Princess and Her Hair blog.  If you haven't checked out this blog before, be sure you do.  She has so many cute hairstyles to try, with instructions!

Since we have shorter hair now, we'll have to see what cute style we can come up with this year.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Holiday Hair Goodies

I have a ton of ribbon and I thought I would try to put some of it to use by making my daughter a few hair accessories.  I am no hair bow expert, so everything you see here, is plain and simple!

This headband is my absolute favorite!  I took a plain white plastic headband and hot glued the red ribbon to it.  To make that cute little bow, I just made a loop with those two ribbons, glued them together and wrapped the pink ribbon around the center.  The festive red makes it perfect for Christmas, but she can also wear it for Valentine's Day or any other time.

It's that time of year when static reigns supreme, and with my daughters whispy hair, that means trouble.  We do a lot of ponytails and braids to keep the hair under control.  So, I made two new ribbon ponies.  For the first one, I used 2 different green ribbons, wrapped in the center with a piece of red ribbon.  And for the second one, I used one piece of wide sheer ribbon, plus 2 pieces of very narrow green ribbon.  I tied small jingle bells to the ends of the green ribbon.  These ribbon ponies are really simple to make and you can see one of my earlier posts HERE on how to put them together.

And last but not least, is this really simple hair clip.  Nothing fancy here!  I just hot glued the striped ribbon to the hair clip, then hot glued two pom poms to the top.

Ribbon Ponies

Every once in a while, my daugter will skip the headband and ask for a ponytail.  We have some basic ponytail holders, but nothing too fancy.  And, I keep seeing these really cute decorated ponytail holders, but always figured I could make them myself.  So, I gave it a try!

I bought a pack of 100 ponytail holders at the dollar store, then raided my ribbon scrap jars to see what I could come up with.  Grab your glue gun and a lighter too - they will come in handy for this project.

I started off with one ponytail holder and some coordinating ribbons.  For this first one, I decided on two ribbons to keep it simple.

Next, I tied the smaller of the two ribbons onto the pony, pulling the knot tight.  Then, I tied the larger ribbon right on top of the other knot, again pulling tight.

To cover the knot, I cut a smaller piece of one of the ribbons, hot glued one end and wrapped it around the knot.

With everything in place, I trimmed the ribbons and used a lighter to seal the ends.  All you need to do is move the flame close to the end of the ribbon and it will melt it.  This helps to keep your ribbon from fraying.

Here is the finished ribbon pony!  I think it turned out pretty well and looks really cute.  I love how easy they are to make, so I made another one in pink as well.

Button Headband

I've been really busy prepping for my daughter's birthday, but in between making decorations and creating a fairy cake, I wanted to share this quick and easy tutorial for making a button headband.  I've seen this done in different ways on a couple of blogs, but liked this one the best, using the stretchy headband.

My daughter has a ton of headbands, including some of these stretchy ones.  I thought these would be the perfect candidates to pretty up.  All you need is a stretchy headband, buttons and a needle & thread.

First, line up your buttons in the order you like (I just alternated light and dark colors).  Next, start at the top middle of the headband and begin stitching the buttons on, working your way out on each side.  Continue stitching the remaining buttons on, leaving a small space at the bottom without buttons so your hair doesn't get stuck.

This is a really easy way to pretty up a simple headband, and only takes a small amount of time.  I think I was able to complete this headband in less than 20 minutes.  I will definitely be making a few more for my daughter and maybe some for myself as well.

Headband Roll

My daughter has a TON of hair clips and headbands!  A while ago, I made this adorable tutu hair clip holder following a tutorial I found online.  I even included a center ribbon that had small loops on the back to hold some headbands she had.

It was working out great, until all she wanted to wear was headbands.  Her headband collection grew, but our space to keep them just wasn't cutting it.  I was inspired by an idea to create a bolster style pillow to keep the headbands on.  It looked really cute and seemed pretty simple to create.  Then I hit the jackpot!  I found these bolster pillow forms at a local yard sale.  I got two for $3!

So, I used some leftover fabric I had used to create the tutu hair clip holder.  I sewed along one side of the fabric to create a sleeve.  After pushing the bolster through the fabric sleeve, I tucked the extra fabric into the ends of the bolster and added an extra piece of coordinating fabric.

I think it turned out really well and looks so cute with all the headbands on it.  The big plus is that her headbands won't get tangled up in a basket.  The bigger plus is that she can take them off and put them back herself, meaning I shouldn't find headbands laying all over my house.
