As her room mom, we worked together really well and she was always so receptive to all the ideas I came up with for the class. One of the most fun projects I worked on with the class was creating a scrapbook for each student. I had seen a few ideas while browsing Pinterest, and kind of pulled together my favorite parts from each of those ideas to create our own.<br />
<br />
This is how it worked. Every month, I went into the classroom for a day and we worked on our scrapbook page for that month. I used 12 x 12 paper, divided into 4 equal squares. The design was pretty much the same for each page - one square for their name, one square for their handprint, one square for a poem and one square for a drawing/writing sample. Everything on the page came together to represent the season or a holiday - the colors on the page, the handprint creation, and the poem.<br />
<br />
Since our last day was in early June, I did our last handprint in May and started assembling the books to distribute to parents on the day of our end of year class picnic. I punched two holes in each page, including the front and back cardstock pages, and bound them together with binder rings. To make it look cute, I tied school themed ribbon to the binder rings.<br />
<br />
I wanted to share this now, in case there are other room moms out there looking for a fun class activity that you can put together a little at a time over the course of the school year. It was definitely a lot of work, but so worth it in the end. The kids loved seeing the finished product and their parents were so happy with such a sweet keepsake of their year in kindergarten. The handprints were adorable and also showed how much they had grown.<br />

His favorite books to read are the books of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. He's read all six books, multiple times, so it was no surprise when his 8th birthday rolled around that he wanted to celebrate Wimpy Kid style!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aJOlbvRlEsE/T0GugrMTkzI/AAAAAAAABxY/LWZ1SapjVu4/s1600/IMG_2958a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aJOlbvRlEsE/T0GugrMTkzI/AAAAAAAABxY/LWZ1SapjVu4/s400/IMG_2958a.JPG" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I found some fantastic inspiration on Pinterest and used some party details from different events to create a fun time for my son and his friends.<br />
<br />
First, I started with the invitation. And when I saw <a href="http://blog.capscreations.com/2011/08/diary-of-wimpy-kid-party.html" target="_blank">THIS</a> cheese invitation from Cap Creations, I knew this was the one we would have to recreate! I printed our party details onto yellow cardstock, cut them out into 5 inch squares and used my 1 inch hole punch and regular hole punch to add the holes to the cheese slice. I then went back and used brown, orange and green ink pads to add the gross coloring to the cheese (using a q-tip). We also included an extra slip of paper telling the guest, "You've got the cheese touch!"<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VCqZVSKwe7c/T0GvF_ZFugI/AAAAAAAABxo/xV8-vEPdyUI/s1600/IMG_2924a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VCqZVSKwe7c/T0GvF_ZFugI/AAAAAAAABxo/xV8-vEPdyUI/s400/IMG_2924a.JPG" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0Iqmb7qrXIY/T0GvEO30YmI/AAAAAAAABxg/FLLX_hLCESE/s1600/IMG_2922a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0Iqmb7qrXIY/T0GvEO30YmI/AAAAAAAABxg/FLLX_hLCESE/s400/IMG_2922a.JPG" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><br />
<br />
We did a simple color scheme - black and white, like the drawings in the books, with a pop of red, like the color of the first book. We had black, white and red balloons and I made a felt banner in the same colors with his name.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5tIh_wsHMxM/T0GwzjS7HmI/AAAAAAAAByo/tqzG4SK4lfE/s1600/IMG_2963a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5tIh_wsHMxM/T0GwzjS7HmI/AAAAAAAAByo/tqzG4SK4lfE/s400/IMG_2963a.JPG" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We even added our own stinky cheese to the front porch. I took a slice of swiss cheese and colored it with markers. Unlike the characters in the book, our guests had no problem picking up the cheese to gross everyone out!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lEcDEFmPlTY/T0GxPC3t4GI/AAAAAAAAByw/SULtOVGBiS4/s1600/IMG_2967a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lEcDEFmPlTY/T0GxPC3t4GI/AAAAAAAAByw/SULtOVGBiS4/s400/IMG_2967a.JPG" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><br />
My son decided to have a movie party, but we added in a few games to play in the beginning while we waited for all the guests to arrive. We played Fregley's Sayings. For this game, each guest received a slip of paper with something that Fregley says. They had to read it, but their lips had to cover their teeth when they said it. If you laughed you got eliminated, and the last person standing was the winner. "Can you chew gum with your belly button?"<br />
<br />
We also played the Secret Word game. For this game, the player needs to get the group to say the secret word on their card, but without saying any of the forbidden words. For example, one of the secret words was "diary" but the player was not allowed to say book, journal, red, wimpy or kid.<br />
<br />
Did you know there were a few event kits released at the time of some of the books' releases that you can download for free? That's where we found these two games. You can download the <a href="http://www.wimpykid.com/Book4EventKitWeb.pdf" target="_blank">Dog Days Event Kit</a>, <a href="http://issuu.com/hnabooks/docs/wimpykid5eventgudie" target="_blank">The Ugly Truth Event Kit</a>, and the <a href="http://www.wimpykidclub.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/pdf/cabinfever_eventkit.pdf" target="_blank">Cabin Fever Event Kit</a>.<br />
<br />
The last game we played was Mixed Up Wimpy Kids, and my son actually came up with this game idea. Each player receives a recording sheet and a pencil. Everyone takes a turn rolling the die. Each number on the die represents a part of the character they are going to draw. For example, if they roll a 1, they draw the head. But since this is the Mixed Up Wimpy Kid game, they roll the die again to find out which character's body part they draw. We assigned each number on the die a body part and a character from the books. So, the kids ended up with some crazy mixed up characters with Fregley's head and Rowley's body, wearing Loded Diper t-shirts and sporting mohawks! Even the names got mixed up!<br />
<br />

<br />
While watching the movie the kids had pizza. Then about halfway through, we held an intermission where the kids could fill up treat sacks with popcorn, pretzels, and candy.<br />
<br />
After the movie we had cake and ice cream. Here is the cake I made. It's a vanilla cake, with cream cheese frosting and covered in fondant. The lettering, cheese and squares on the top cake are all made of fondant. The character faces were piped on using royal icing. The figures holding the letters of his name are actual action figures.<br />

<br />
For party favors I made diaries (I mean journals) for each guest. I bought the little notebooks at the Dollar Tree and covered them with <a href="http://blog.kennerroad.com/2011/08/diary-of-a-grade-schooler-binder/" target="_blank">THESE</a> free printables from the Kenner Road blog - they worked out perfectly!<br />

I also created these Diary of a Wimpy Kid pillowcases for each guest. I bought standard size white pillowcases from Walmart. I used the freezer paper stencil technique to put "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" along the edge and used the crayon on sandpaper technique to put Greg and Rowley's images in the center of the pillowcase. These were also a big hit!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BJCi4ze_Pps/T0GwGmSaJxI/AAAAAAAAByg/IVKexDFVmJg/s1600/IMG_2962a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BJCi4ze_Pps/T0GwGmSaJxI/AAAAAAAAByg/IVKexDFVmJg/s400/IMG_2962a.JPG" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><br />
The last thing we did was write thank you notes to our guests. We typed a template for our thank you notes using Greg's thank you notes from the first book. They were pretty funny and a great end to the Wimpy Party!<br />

I guess that's why I volunteered to be room mom for both of my kids' classes this year - yes, I often wonder, what was I thinking; and no, I don't have that much free time, although I like to think I do.<br />
<br />
When your children are lucky enough to have caring, dedicated and positive teachers in their lives on a daily basis, it's nice to do a little something for them to show them how much you appreciate all that they do.<br />
<br />
I made this teacher's survival kit for my daughter's teacher for American Education Week. As a former teacher, I remember that week all too well. It was exciting and stressful all at the same time, but a little treat would surely help a teacher survive any rough patch during that week.<br />
<br />
I purchased a plastic jewelry organizer at my local craft store and covered the lid with some pretty scrapbooking paper and adhesive letters. I added some of the teacher's favorite treats and topped it off with a pretty ribbon. She loved it!<br />

This would make an easy and sweet gift for a teacher at any time of the year! I'm thinking of making one for myself to keep at home!Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05766665329322551355noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543872957109785349.post-41203267426246504082012-02-08T11:28:00.001-05:002012-02-16T22:14:51.256-05:00Boys Valentine Airplane TeeI made <a href="http://themuddyprincess.blogspot.com/2012/02/girls-ruffled-heart-valentines-day.html">THIS</a> cute dress for my daughter for Valentine's Day and was trying to find something cool to make for my son. Ruffly hearts were just not going to cut it for an 8 year old (almost) boy . <br />
<br />
A while ago I found <a href="http://fionaandco.blogspot.com/2011/03/5-4-3-2-1-blast-off.html">THIS</a> neat shirt on Pinterest, and it became my inspiration for this project.<br />
<br />
I made the airplane do a heart loop. Instant Valentine tee. An, 8 year old approved, cool, Valentine tee. YES!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mClNJheU8xo/TzKiUrFn8tI/AAAAAAAABvs/7qVSZB9W9G8/s1600/IMG_2939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" sda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mClNJheU8xo/TzKiUrFn8tI/AAAAAAAABvs/7qVSZB9W9G8/s400/IMG_2939.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TtF-djm0UfU/TzKiVFMlg5I/AAAAAAAABv0/TNXKJyByDqg/s1600/IMG_2940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" sda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TtF-djm0UfU/TzKiVFMlg5I/AAAAAAAABv0/TNXKJyByDqg/s400/IMG_2940.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
The airplane is made from off white cotton fabric (about 8 pieces stacked together), stitched along the edge for detail to make it look like a paper airplane. And I hand stitched the airplane's heart loop with black embroidery thread. This project only took about 30 minutes to complete and didn't cost me anything since we used a plain red tee we already had and I already had the fabric and thread on hand.<br />
<br />

Life got hectic and the blog had to be pushed to the back burner. But with life settling into a better groove, I set a goal for this new year to give a little bit of my time back to blogging. So, if you've stuck around this long, you might as well stick around a little longer, to see what new crafty adventures I have up my sleeve.<br />
<br />
First up, is this adorable ruffled heart dress I made for my daughter for Valentine's Day. I found the idea on Pinterest. Don't you just love that place? I could wallow away the hours pinning. And although I pin a lot of stuff, I feel like I've been doing a pretty good job at actually doing projects that I pin. For every 100 projects that I pin, I probably make 1. That's good, right? Just say it's good! :)<br />
<br />
So anyway, I saw <a href="http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2012/01/ruffled-heart-valentine-dress-made-from-recycled-tshirts.html">THIS</a> cute tutorial for making a ruffled heart dress. Easy to follow instructions and clear pictures to show you step by step what to do. I was not planning on making the dress, but I did have a denim jumper that needed a little TLC. It was just kind of blah and I thought that adding the ruffled heart to this jumper would be just the thing to make it fun to wear again. I used an old red tee for the ruffled heart, the hem of the red tee for the belt and a red chiffon layer from an old dress to add to the bottom of the jumper (it was a little on the short side, so this helped with the length). <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H99IWgS1pe4/TzKebGsNuTI/AAAAAAAABvk/ScZFASp3Mrw/s1600/IMG_2935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H99IWgS1pe4/TzKebGsNuTI/AAAAAAAABvk/ScZFASp3Mrw/s400/IMG_2935.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lDO19fXHAck/TzKeY0LBoNI/AAAAAAAABvc/5AC5I7wY5W8/s1600/IMG_2936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lDO19fXHAck/TzKeY0LBoNI/AAAAAAAABvc/5AC5I7wY5W8/s400/IMG_2936.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I think it took about an hour to complete. Now, we have a cute dress to wear for Valentine's Day and were able to repurpose a piece of clothing.<br />

If you are reading this, I appreciate you sticking around! I haven't posted in quite some time because getting ready for and starting life with two kids in elementary school has actually been pretty hectic. I took on the responsibility of being room mom for both of my children's classes, volunteered to be our school representative for the Trick or Treat for Unicef program, and signed up both kids for after school activities. So, it's been a little busy trying to get used to our new schedule.<br />
<br />
I just wanted to stop in today to share the Halloween costumes I made for my kids' this year. I can't believe I got them done this early! My son wanted to be a knight and my daughter wanted to be a pirate princess.<br />
<br />
For the knight costume, I used McCalls pattern 5500 to create the "chainmail" shirt, tunic, helmet and shoulder armor. I created the belt, sword sheath, and boot covers (not pictured) on my own.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d0klZg3zegE/Too0W8J-ZdI/AAAAAAAABuA/E9_3brvKlRs/s1600/IMG_2467a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d0klZg3zegE/Too0W8J-ZdI/AAAAAAAABuA/E9_3brvKlRs/s400/IMG_2467a.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kM8yFBE9X7c/Too0YXvR9bI/AAAAAAAABuE/2QS23vVvTlQ/s1600/IMG_2468a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" kca="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kM8yFBE9X7c/Too0YXvR9bI/AAAAAAAABuE/2QS23vVvTlQ/s400/IMG_2468a.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
For the pirate princess costume, I made the shirt using the peasant blouse tutorial <a href="http://indietutes.blogspot.com/2007/07/peasant-blouse.html">HERE</a> and made the bandana skirt using the tutorial <a href="http://alphamom.com/family-fun/holidays/talk-like-a-pirate-day-crafts/">HERE</a>. I made the striped bloomers and belt on my own, and purchased the head bandana.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x0sThmzM9vs/Too0Z6YeSYI/AAAAAAAABuI/MbvJm_KRC5Y/s1600/IMG_2464a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" kca="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x0sThmzM9vs/Too0Z6YeSYI/AAAAAAAABuI/MbvJm_KRC5Y/s400/IMG_2464a.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
The kids are very happy with their costumes and can't wait to go trick-or-treating! What will your kids be this year?Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05766665329322551355noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543872957109785349.post-48996409247638208552011-08-27T23:42:00.002-04:002011-09-15T22:12:01.715-04:00Cool Pencil Pouch!My son had a hard time finding a pencil pouch he liked for school this year, so we bought a plain one with plans of making it much cooler. I've been practicing my hand embroidering and wanted to give it a try as we turned a plain black and gray pencil pouch into a really cool pencil pouch featuring his favorite book character!<br />
<br />
I printed out pictures from the internet and pinned them to the pouch. Then, using embroidery floss, I stitched right over top of the design on the paper. When I was finished, I just tore off the paper leaving only the stitching behind. I think it turned out looking really cool! My son is really excited as well and can't wait to show it off on his first day of school!<br />

We pull everything out, try things on, and see what we might need to replace since we've outgrown things. <br />
<br />
Trying to save a little money this year, I decided to look through the pile of outgrown clothing and see if there was anything I could repurpose. One thing that caught my eye, was this simple but cute penguin shirt. My daughter and I both loved this shirt, but the long sleeves had become too short on her this year. But paired with the sleeves of another too small shirt, we might be able to get another season of life out of it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-te8okHfqJvI/Tj3Cy9YOIhI/AAAAAAAABtA/GChTmElCJWM/s1600/IMG_1894a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-te8okHfqJvI/Tj3Cy9YOIhI/AAAAAAAABtA/GChTmElCJWM/s400/IMG_1894a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So, I took the blue shirt and cut the sleeves off. I cut a straight line across at the arm pit.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xtRTUOZ4Ffs/Tj3DKtkByPI/AAAAAAAABtE/-nbtArRbfwQ/s1600/IMG_1895a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xtRTUOZ4Ffs/Tj3DKtkByPI/AAAAAAAABtE/-nbtArRbfwQ/s400/IMG_1895a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Next, I cut the sleeves off the penguin shirt, leaving about 3/4 of the original length of the sleeves.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-70fN0WbFNWQ/Tj3DhWBGGYI/AAAAAAAABtI/aJBAMYeyJZ0/s1600/IMG_1896a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-70fN0WbFNWQ/Tj3DhWBGGYI/AAAAAAAABtI/aJBAMYeyJZ0/s400/IMG_1896a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Then, I turned the blue sleeves inside out, slipped them onto the white sleeves and pinned them in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N88VfiU2Voo/Tj3EBdjtgkI/AAAAAAAABtM/EmDCeWT4Xxg/s1600/IMG_1897a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N88VfiU2Voo/Tj3EBdjtgkI/AAAAAAAABtM/EmDCeWT4Xxg/s400/IMG_1897a.JPG" t$="true" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I used a straight stitch to sew the sleeves together. When I was finished, I removed the pins and pulled the blue sleeves down and right side out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JaG1tatwp5Q/Tj3EUiLP6WI/AAAAAAAABtQ/9zzHAZxeMQE/s1600/IMG_1898a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JaG1tatwp5Q/Tj3EUiLP6WI/AAAAAAAABtQ/9zzHAZxeMQE/s400/IMG_1898a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Although the length of this shirt was still ok, I thought it couldn't hurt to add a little hem from the blue shirt to match the blue sleeves we added. So I cut the bottom hem off the blue shirt, plus a few inches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dCqECAcmOsg/Tj3E9y7WzEI/AAAAAAAABtU/lImRYgP7bKU/s1600/IMG_1899a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dCqECAcmOsg/Tj3E9y7WzEI/AAAAAAAABtU/lImRYgP7bKU/s400/IMG_1899a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Again, I pinned this into place along the bottom hem of the white penguin shirt, and sewed the two hems together with a straight stitch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dME5yEThDno/Tj3FM285nNI/AAAAAAAABtY/G1Nd6BESzn4/s1600/IMG_1900a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dME5yEThDno/Tj3FM285nNI/AAAAAAAABtY/G1Nd6BESzn4/s400/IMG_1900a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I think it turned out really cute! And I'm glad we were able to save another shirt for another year!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PrlWCPFWpJw/Tj3FXx-qFdI/AAAAAAAABtc/TaL0L6ezoKI/s1600/IMG_1901a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PrlWCPFWpJw/Tj3FXx-qFdI/AAAAAAAABtc/TaL0L6ezoKI/s400/IMG_1901a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EzNVlDiNi0Q/Tj3FY9pqr2I/AAAAAAAABtg/yiv_YwICmzQ/s1600/IMG_1904a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EzNVlDiNi0Q/Tj3FY9pqr2I/AAAAAAAABtg/yiv_YwICmzQ/s400/IMG_1904a.JPG" t$="true" width="266" /></a></div>Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05766665329322551355noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543872957109785349.post-31012663072016113562011-08-03T20:39:00.001-04:002011-08-05T09:21:28.636-04:00Sticker I SpyMy kids have TONS of stickers! They love getting them, but for some reason they don't like using them, so we have an entire shoe box tote full of stickers. So, I thought I'd put some of these stickers to good use and made I Spy Sticker pages.<br />
<br />
They were really simple to put together. I took a piece of cardstock and covered it in stickers. I used a few big ones, filled in a majority of the space with small to medium sized stickers, then filled in the small spots with those really tiny sticker chart stickers. There are easily over 100 stickers on the page. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C10yxCHmAVQ/TjnpUsSLK0I/AAAAAAAABsw/_L2WdOAmazo/s1600/IMG_1866a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C10yxCHmAVQ/TjnpUsSLK0I/AAAAAAAABsw/_L2WdOAmazo/s400/IMG_1866a.JPG" t$="true" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--R1rVaOSqqU/TjnpVIs_U8I/AAAAAAAABs0/Q-Eur__caUw/s1600/IMG_1867a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--R1rVaOSqqU/TjnpVIs_U8I/AAAAAAAABs0/Q-Eur__caUw/s400/IMG_1867a.JPG" t$="true" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I slipped the cardstock into a page protector. I printed a page that had a list of all the stickers that were on the page and slipped it in the page protector behind the sticker page. This would be a great little game to keep in the car. The older kids can read their list on the back to find things on their own. Or the kids can look at each other's sticker page and tell the other what to find.</div><br />

My inspiration came from Jake and the Neverland Pirates, a new show on Disney Junior, and one of her favorites.<br />
<br />
I started by making this invitation to send out to all her pirate friends. I found the adorable pirate girl graphics <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/61665412/girl-power-pirate-clip-art?ref=sr_list_1&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=pirate+girl+power&ga_order=date_desc&ga_ship_to=US&ga_view_type=list&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AInsITwgORE/TjcYBb70_1I/AAAAAAAABrQ/UF-aY0t4DeQ/s1600/IMG_1861b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AInsITwgORE/TjcYBb70_1I/AAAAAAAABrQ/UF-aY0t4DeQ/s400/IMG_1861b.jpg" t$="true" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<br />
With the extreme heat, we knew this year's party would definitely need to revolve around the pool, so the decorations went up around the pool area. <br />
<br />
I made the "Pirate Lagoon" sign on a piece of butcher paper and attached it to a hula hoop coverd in black crepe paper. The pink bunting was made from a vinyl shower curtain I bought on clearance at Target. I cut out the triangles and sewed them together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5fdam5U3vLs/TjcdZiQRbYI/AAAAAAAABrU/bV_hyhQSoBw/s1600/IMG_1786a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5fdam5U3vLs/TjcdZiQRbYI/AAAAAAAABrU/bV_hyhQSoBw/s400/IMG_1786a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I purchased the white net from Oriental Trading Company and made the pink/black/white scrap banners with some leftover fabric I had.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ygZ8hRVFI7A/Tjcdnw2R3cI/AAAAAAAABrY/52ciGE58qXs/s1600/IMG_1790a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ygZ8hRVFI7A/Tjcdnw2R3cI/AAAAAAAABrY/52ciGE58qXs/s400/IMG_1790a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I did add this extra bunting and wooden X in our front yard by the mailbox. This would help guests find where X marked the spot for the party!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8Rfq-D6tXf0/Tjcd7NR-Q1I/AAAAAAAABrc/Jw6kmMZ1CXA/s1600/IMG_1862a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8Rfq-D6tXf0/Tjcd7NR-Q1I/AAAAAAAABrc/Jw6kmMZ1CXA/s400/IMG_1862a.JPG" t$="true" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For the party, we provided some pirate goodies for our guests. Pirate friends who attended, each received a pirate bandana and a handmade eye patch. For the eye patch I purchased stretchy headbands and sewed on a pirate patch shape cut from felt. The pink designs were cut using my Cuttlebug, and attached with sticky dots.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2awo8uliMEo/TjceILMiPWI/AAAAAAAABrg/jh9-ymyS8vo/s1600/IMG_1802a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2awo8uliMEo/TjceILMiPWI/AAAAAAAABrg/jh9-ymyS8vo/s400/IMG_1802a.JPG" t$="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I made newspaper swords for big brother and his friend, following the tutorial at <a href="http://www.filthwizardry.com/2010/09/rolled-newspaper-pirate-swords-and.html">Filth Wizardry</a>. The pirates also decorated a wooden treasure box.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The birthday pirate princess had a special outfit to wear for the day as well. I didn't get many pics of her in this because most of our time was spent in the pool. I made the <a href="http://themuddyprincess.blogspot.com/2011/03/pirate-girl-skirt.html">pirate skirt</a> a while ago and created this shirt to go with it. And Heather, over at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/celtictidecreations">Celtic Tide Creations</a>, was kind enough to create this Izzy (from Jake and the Neverland Pirates) hair clip.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Besides lots of giggling and splashing in the pool, the pirate friends also went on a treasure hunt. I made up some clues for the kids to follow. To make them look old, I tore the edges of the paper, then soaked each piece in a bowl of soda and soy sauce. They ended up with this nice vintage looking color.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The pirates found the treasure where X marked the spot - in the sandbox! Then everyone gathered around to collect their loot and add it to their treasure boxes they decorated when they arrived. Treasure included rings, necklaces, pirate coins and tattoos. I even made some of the pretty pink pirate coins into old looking coins for big brother and his friend using gold spray paint and brown acrylic paint.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Back in the Fall, I posted about a <a href="http://themuddyprincess.blogspot.com/2010/11/mommy-me-journal.html">Mommy & Me Journal</a> that I created for my son and I to use to write back in forth to one another. It was a great project, because not only did we get to write fun little notes to each other, but it gave my son the opportunity to practice his writing skills. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i3DQbdpv5kM/Th-GxEhg4gI/AAAAAAAABpw/4RrEDO7vHyQ/s1600/journal" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i3DQbdpv5kM/Th-GxEhg4gI/AAAAAAAABpw/4RrEDO7vHyQ/s400/journal" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
One reader will have the chance to win their own personalized journal. You can choose any combination from the following:<br />
* Mother<br />
* Father<br />
* Son<br />
* Daughter<br />
* Brother<br />
* Sister<br />
<br />
I did Mother and Son, since my son was in the first grade and becoming a blossoming writer. But you could also do Mother and Daughter or even Brother and Sister. If you win, the choice is yours!<br />
<br />

Creating glitter toes is fairly simple, but the results are really pretty. <br />
<br />
I started by putting a clear base coat on my toenails, then sprinkling craft glitter on top. Make sure you have a piece of paper or paper towel underneath your feet to catch the extra glitter. Only do 1-2 toes at a time, so the glitter can stick and the polish doesn't dry too quickly. After you have the glitter applied to all your toes, give them 5-10 minutes to dry and set up, then apply a clear top coat. I recommend keeping one bottle of top coat just for glitter toes, since some of the glitter will stick to your brush and end up in your top coat.<br />
<br />
I used a basic fine craft glitter and it was easy to apply. I have almost every color of the rainbow, so I'll have to try another color soon. Glitter toes are easy to create and really fun to wear! What color glitter toes will you wear?<br />

All you need is a box of ice cream sandwiches and some red, white and blue sprinkles. To get better coverage, I cut each sandwich in half, then dipped all the sides into the sprinkles. Store back in the freezer until you are ready to serve. Kids already love this ice cream treat, and the sprinkles make them even more fun!<br />

This first year has been quite the adventure, but I've learned so much about blogging and have been inspired by so many others. I've met some great mom bloggers, have had some fantastic opportunities, and have even been able to put my craft talents to use for a good cause. <br />
<br />
I wanted to do a little something to celebrate and decided to do a few giveaways. Here at The Muddy Princess we like to play, craft and learn, so I wanted to help 3 lucky winners do that with our prizes. Today's giveaway is for playing.<br />
<br />
One lucky reader of The Muddy Princess will win this handmade I Spy Jar. My kids loved these when they were younger! This I Spy Jar is perfect for the younger crowd, toddler to preschooler. The jar is also the perfect size to keep in the car or even stash in your bag for emergency entertainment (like waiting in a long line at the grocery store). This I Spy Jar is filled with rice and 10 different colored items. There is also a handy card attached to help keep track of the items you are looking for. The lid has been securely attached, to keep the rice and small items safely inside.<br />

The week one overview can be found <a href="http://themuddyprincess.blogspot.com/2011/06/summer-camp-week-1-camping.html">HERE</a>. But, today I wanted to share with you one of our easy crafts we completed during our week two at-home summer camp. The theme was America the Beautiful, in honor of the 4th of July.<br />
<br />
We made small flag windsocks using only a few supplies - small flag on a stick, toilet paper tube, yarn, glue and masking tape. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dMUoh1bRHAM/ThtkQVPQcHI/AAAAAAAABos/ZR3RDVu8WJc/s1600/IMG_1670a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" m$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dMUoh1bRHAM/ThtkQVPQcHI/AAAAAAAABos/ZR3RDVu8WJc/s400/IMG_1670a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
We started by wrapping a piece of masking tape, sticky side facing out, around the tube. The kids stuck pieces of yarn onto the tape. These would hang down for the bottom of the windsock.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T41gBo8qXeg/Thtk8ViKh0I/AAAAAAAABow/FHoJLARBs7w/s1600/IMG_1671a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T41gBo8qXeg/Thtk8ViKh0I/AAAAAAAABow/FHoJLARBs7w/s400/IMG_1671a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
After the kids had their yarn in place, we put another piece of tape, sticky side down this time, over top of the yarn to keep it in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K-q6SlIYDPM/ThtlJxug1cI/AAAAAAAABo0/O5WmOUrznT0/s1600/IMG_1672a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" m$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K-q6SlIYDPM/ThtlJxug1cI/AAAAAAAABo0/O5WmOUrznT0/s400/IMG_1672a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
We also had some leftover foam stars from another project, and the kids decided to use these and tied them onto the yarn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pbnb_Xq-43w/Thtl9Mx6OeI/AAAAAAAABo8/WnAHBrUgfR8/s1600/IMG_1675a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" m$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pbnb_Xq-43w/Thtl9Mx6OeI/AAAAAAAABo8/WnAHBrUgfR8/s400/IMG_1675a.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Next, we ran a line of glue down the length of the tube to hold the flag in place. These flags are the mini flags on a stick; we just removed the flag from the stick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fUcwIVcSogw/Thtln4o6o0I/AAAAAAAABo4/LTeLnQPND94/s1600/IMG_1676a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" m$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fUcwIVcSogw/Thtln4o6o0I/AAAAAAAABo4/LTeLnQPND94/s400/IMG_1676a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Then, we wrapped the flag around the tube, and put a little more glue to keep it in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X4I1EAlKuXY/ThtmP1SYNrI/AAAAAAAABpA/uPud9CrEXKI/s1600/IMG_1677a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" m$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X4I1EAlKuXY/ThtmP1SYNrI/AAAAAAAABpA/uPud9CrEXKI/s400/IMG_1677a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Last, we added one more piece of yarn for hanging, by taping it inside the top part of the tube.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-APzBSLcCBzg/ThtmhPo7-dI/AAAAAAAABpE/ektPv8CctU4/s1600/IMG_1678a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-APzBSLcCBzg/ThtmhPo7-dI/AAAAAAAABpE/ektPv8CctU4/s400/IMG_1678a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
We hung these on our front porch, to help with the drying, but the kids wanted to use them inside to decorate our sunroom. I think they turned out super cute and would like nice anywhere!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JkEaaGJX_SY/Thtm7MFfDbI/AAAAAAAABpI/Q-NbmRT_K6o/s1600/IMG_1679a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JkEaaGJX_SY/Thtm7MFfDbI/AAAAAAAABpI/Q-NbmRT_K6o/s400/IMG_1679a.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05766665329322551355noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543872957109785349.post-84889900271070842082011-06-30T20:59:00.002-04:002011-06-30T22:25:59.091-04:00Uncle Sam DecorationI made this Uncle Sam decoration ages ago (I can't remember where I saw the idea), but recently thought of making a few more to use as decorations for the summer holidays. He is actually pretty easy to make. Here is a list of supplies you will need:<br />
<ul><li>terra cotta pot and saucer</li>
<li>metal coffee can</li>
<li>acrylic paint and brushes</li>
<li>floral wire</li>
<li>wooden stars</li>
<li>hot glue gun</li>
<li>painters tape (optional)</li>
</ul>I started by painting all of my pieces first. I painted the saucer blue. I painted the rim of the pot white and the rest a peachy color; once dry I went back and painted on the simple face. I painted the can in red and white stripes; to make my stripes nice and neat, I used painters tape. And I painted both sides of my wooden stars yellow.<br />
<br />
After everything had been painted and had a full 24 hours to dry, I glued everything together using epoxy (make sure to use the epoxy in a well ventilated area). I cut a piece of floral wire long enough to fit around the can, curled it around a pencil, twisted the ends together, and slipped it over the can. Then I hot glued the wooden stars randomly around the wire.<br />
<br />
And that was it! It's a really cute decoration and has held up really well to being outside for the past 5+ years. I will sometimes use it as is for a decoration, or add some water and cut flowers to the can. One year we also filled it with sand, stuck in some sparklers and lit them for a fun backyard bbq party.<br />
<br />

Our theme was "Camping in our own Backyard" and we fit in lots of fun crafts and activities. Here is a round up of all the fun!<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>Summer Reading at the Library</strong><br />
We stopped by our local library branch to pick up our summer reading packets. We picked out LOTS of good books and started reading right away. A few of our favorite camping stories we read were Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer, S is for Smores by Helen James, Amelia Bedelia Goes Camping by Peggy Parish, Stella and Roy Go Camping by Ashley Wolff and The Berenstain Bears Go to Camp by Stan & Jan Berenstain. So far, my son has read 11 books and my daughter has read 8!<br />
<br />
<strong>Summer Memory Box</strong><br />
I found these CD boxes at my local craft store on clearance for only .50 each! The kids and I went on a nature walk in our yard to find some items to use to decorate their boxes. The kids can add momentos and keepsakes to their memory boxes to help remember all the fun they had during their summer vacation.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ULCCP6_qfCs/TgvkAUSeoEI/AAAAAAAABoY/NaBR-6AX6P8/s1600/IMG_1564a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ULCCP6_qfCs/TgvkAUSeoEI/AAAAAAAABoY/NaBR-6AX6P8/s400/IMG_1564a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5S26vOf2oMI/TgvkB2JyHWI/AAAAAAAABoc/zQtVny4gi70/s1600/IMG_1565a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5S26vOf2oMI/TgvkB2JyHWI/AAAAAAAABoc/zQtVny4gi70/s400/IMG_1565a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Bead Bookmark</strong><br />
This bead bookmark will help the kids keep track of all the books they've read this summer. For every book they read, they get to add a bead to the bookmark.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-K88reUjzyF8/Tgvj4vQ7saI/AAAAAAAABoA/fJGgr_QucEI/s1600/IMG_1554a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-K88reUjzyF8/Tgvj4vQ7saI/AAAAAAAABoA/fJGgr_QucEI/s400/IMG_1554a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--s5YW9MLksc/Tgvj5uBGYyI/AAAAAAAABoE/DPChnnOMezc/s1600/IMG_1556a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--s5YW9MLksc/Tgvj5uBGYyI/AAAAAAAABoE/DPChnnOMezc/s400/IMG_1556a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Camp Sign</strong><br />
Using a piece of cardboard for the sign, the kids decorated their signs with nature items and used beans to spell out their initials. We punched holes in the top and added some twine to hang the signs.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_wS1wcZyS4c/Tgvj9MO54oI/AAAAAAAABoQ/wwp8bF_0d7I/s1600/IMG_1561a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_wS1wcZyS4c/Tgvj9MO54oI/AAAAAAAABoQ/wwp8bF_0d7I/s400/IMG_1561a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2_KO4n-9eHU/Tgvj-LcLBfI/AAAAAAAABoU/Ynqx5Ga9HgY/s1600/IMG_1563a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2_KO4n-9eHU/Tgvj-LcLBfI/AAAAAAAABoU/Ynqx5Ga9HgY/s400/IMG_1563a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Firefly Jars</strong><br />
Using a small gravy jar, we poked holes in the lid with a screwdriver to make a firefly jar. The kids painted pictures on their jars to look like the outdoors with fireflies all around.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RBBkZ5ZU6F4/Tgvj6wOaZ-I/AAAAAAAABoI/h2Kue7h5zrI/s1600/IMG_1558a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RBBkZ5ZU6F4/Tgvj6wOaZ-I/AAAAAAAABoI/h2Kue7h5zrI/s400/IMG_1558a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Friendship Bracelets</strong><br />
We made friendship bracelets with beads as well as braided ones. <br />
<br />
<strong>Paint Your Own Pottery</strong><br />
We visited a local paint your own pottery place to have the kids paint a piece.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q_sfevRJdqM/TgviwlyYH5I/AAAAAAAABnw/iC3w6eAMxGg/s1600/IMG_1544a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" i$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q_sfevRJdqM/TgviwlyYH5I/AAAAAAAABnw/iC3w6eAMxGg/s400/IMG_1544a.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G-lLgW_FdRw/Tgvix4VjVrI/AAAAAAAABn0/flI69aS2IGE/s1600/IMG_1545a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G-lLgW_FdRw/Tgvix4VjVrI/AAAAAAAABn0/flI69aS2IGE/s400/IMG_1545a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Summer Activities Journal</strong><br />
To get our writing juices flowing we started off with this simple journal prompt. The kids wrote about the activities they were hoping to do this summer. (Borrowed from my own copy of 50 Month by Month Draw & Write Prompts by Scholastic.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eVX6MiiZi5E/TgvlW6qvNxI/AAAAAAAABok/9W1-l8jaw3E/s1600/scan0004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" i$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eVX6MiiZi5E/TgvlW6qvNxI/AAAAAAAABok/9W1-l8jaw3E/s400/scan0004.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Roasting Marshmallows</strong><br />
We enjoyed roasting marshmallows by our firepit.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I05AOvZzoBM/TgvjRQjW-KI/AAAAAAAABn8/2JNB7ZJb_o0/s1600/IMG_1513a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I05AOvZzoBM/TgvjRQjW-KI/AAAAAAAABn8/2JNB7ZJb_o0/s400/IMG_1513a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Camping Checklist</strong><br />
We used this camping checklist to help us prepare for our first camping adventure in the backyard. (Borrowed from my own copy of Kindergarten Homework by CTP.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sqI8MtNbbU0/TgvlPE888fI/AAAAAAAABog/Gisjnfg974U/s1600/scan0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" i$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sqI8MtNbbU0/TgvlPE888fI/AAAAAAAABog/Gisjnfg974U/s400/scan0003.jpg" width="290" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<strong>Great American Backyard Campout</strong><br />
We participated in the <a href="http://online.nwf.org/site/PageNavigator/gabc_2010_home">Great American Backyard Campout</a>, and camped out in our backyard. We've never been camping before and this was a good first try for us. Everyone did well and is looking forward to our next camping adventure.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UdWbfQdWNOU/TgvjQVrmmHI/AAAAAAAABn4/tQSS30CrO4U/s1600/IMG_1501a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" i$="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UdWbfQdWNOU/TgvjQVrmmHI/AAAAAAAABn4/tQSS30CrO4U/s400/IMG_1501a.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This first week we were able to fit in almost all of the activities I had planned. Most importantly the kids had a blast! I saved my favorite part for the end. The kids got to sew a homemade patch onto a bandana. The bandana will serve as another keepsake of all the fun we had and all the neat things we learned over the summer. We just did this the other day so I still need to take a pic, but will come back soon to share how they look.<br />

Coming up...Week 2 - America the Beautiful!Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05766665329322551355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543872957109785349.post-3685058533716120972011-06-20T20:14:00.003-04:002011-06-27T23:35:36.137-04:00Love KnotMy husband and I celebrated 11 years of marriage this year. When we got married our pastor surprised us with this love knot, a symbol of our marriage. He took two pieces of string, tied them together and reminded us that no matter how tough things got, the more we might try to pull away from one another, the stronger the knot became. It was a really sweet token and we've had it tucked away ever since.<br />
<br />
I wanted to display the knot in a shadowbox and found the perfect quote to go along with it - <em>"Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads, which sew people together through the years."</em><br />
<br />
I pinned some red burlap on the display board and displayed the knot in the shape of a heart. I printed the quote on some cardstock and pinned that inside the knot heart.<br />

I think I'm just as excited as the kids! A little break from the rushing to and from school, homework and projects will be nice in exchange for carefree, relaxing days by the pool.<br />
<br />
But, I know the kids will get restless probably by noon of the first day, so I've created an at home summer camp schedule of fun stuff for us to do. This is the second year I've done this and it was a BIG help last year in keeping us busy. The schedule of crafts, activities and learning opportunities is vast, but very flexible. If we get to it, great; if not, it's ok and we can either move it to another week or save it for next year. But, at least I have a resource of activities to choose from so we don't get stuck in the rut of watching tv all summer.<br />
<br />
Today, I wanted to share a sneak peek with you of what I have planned. I hope that at the end of each week, I can share with you all the details of our fun. I assigned each week a theme and included day trips, crafts, recipes and learning activities that revolve around that theme. <br />
<br />
Here is our schedule of themes:<br />
<br />
Week of 6/20 - Camping in our own Backyard<br />
Week of 6/27 - America the Beautiful<br />
Week of 7/4 - Weather Around Us<br />
Week of 7/11 - Archaeology<br />
Week of 7/18 - Moving Science<br />
Week of 7/25 - Nature: In the Garden<br />
Week of 8/1 - Beach: Sea Life<br />
Week of 8/8 - Space Exploration<br />
Week of 8/15 - Pioneer Days<br />
Week of 8/22 - Back to School<br />
<br />
Some of our day trips, recipes and crafts may change with our themes, but some activities will be a constant each day or week. Every week, we'll visit our local library to pick up new books for our theme as well as check in for our summer reading program. And daily (or almost daily) we will make time for some workbook practice, journal writing and reading.<br />
<br />
<br />
Want a better idea of what we'll be working on for a theme? Here's a look at our first week's theme of Camping:<br />
<br />
<em>Monday</em> <br />
<ul><li>visit library for new books and summer reading</li>

I made them last year for my son's kindergarten class and again this year for his first grade class (and even for his kindergarten teacher for her new class). <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N-4wYDHw9VM/TfUBLp_tWRI/AAAAAAAABnY/ElVEDwp--s4/s1600/smartie_pants1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N-4wYDHw9VM/TfUBLp_tWRI/AAAAAAAABnY/ElVEDwp--s4/s400/smartie_pants1.jpg" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
I cut a pants shape from cardstock, using brads to hold the corners together and glue to hold the bottom of the legs shut. I drew details onto the pants and stuck a few smarties candies inside each. On the little tag it says, "Have a Great Summer 'Smartie' Pants!"<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-93c55ztl-FY/TfUBMgG3oAI/AAAAAAAABng/MMv2lfhVxbc/s1600/smartie_pants3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-93c55ztl-FY/TfUBMgG3oAI/AAAAAAAABng/MMv2lfhVxbc/s400/smartie_pants3.jpg" t8="true" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<br />
They are pretty easy to put together and a really cute end of the year treat for all the kids' hard work!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cu7dTKiv71U/TfUBMHaUo7I/AAAAAAAABnc/PtpP9WFFaAo/s1600/smartie_pants2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cu7dTKiv71U/TfUBMHaUo7I/AAAAAAAABnc/PtpP9WFFaAo/s400/smartie_pants2.jpg" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div>Kimberlyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05766665329322551355noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543872957109785349.post-47770637887631445772011-06-12T14:02:00.000-04:002011-06-12T14:02:24.589-04:00End of Year TreatWhile browsing all the great ideas over at I Share Printables, I came across this most adorable printable by Beth from <a href="http://www.writeclickscrapbook.com/write_click_scrapbook/2011/06/hi-there-friends-im-super-excited-to-be-hosting-the-blog-today-the-school-year-is-winding-down-only-one-week-to-go-th.html">Write Click Scrapbook</a>.<br />
<br />
The idea to put some goodies in a sand shovel, along with the "Hope You Dig Your Summer" printable was so easy yet so cute! I already had an end of the year treat for my son and his classmates, but thought this would be the perfect treat for my daughter and all her little friends she has made on the playground (other big kids' little siblings).<br />
<br />
I purchased the sand shovels at Michael's for $1. I used small cellophane treat bags to put the goldfish in and tied the bag together and to the shovel with yarn.<br />
<br />
A big thank you to Beth for sharing this printable with everyone and for the fun idea!<br />

We were finishing up elementary school and moving onto middle school, and some of our friends would be going to different schools, so this gave us the opportunity to write a little note and wish them well.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SvgJ9CbRyg8/TfQIOM1lkBI/AAAAAAAABm8/kXylYqIA6jg/s1600/IMG_1356a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SvgJ9CbRyg8/TfQIOM1lkBI/AAAAAAAABm8/kXylYqIA6jg/s400/IMG_1356a.JPG" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-axIr2_YwquA/TfQIQhzOuiI/AAAAAAAABnA/T2ybysyYnZA/s1600/IMG_1358a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-axIr2_YwquA/TfQIQhzOuiI/AAAAAAAABnA/T2ybysyYnZA/s400/IMG_1358a.JPG" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
I decided that even first graders can have a little fun with gathering autographs of their friends and made these handmade autograph books for my son's first grade class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E755kEPF-ls/TfQISfWkffI/AAAAAAAABnE/V_XiskKm3Sw/s1600/IMG_1359a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E755kEPF-ls/TfQISfWkffI/AAAAAAAABnE/V_XiskKm3Sw/s400/IMG_1359a.JPG" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I cut the paper to the size I wanted (mine are approximately 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"), punched holes in one end, and tied the pages and cover together with some yarn. I used blue and white for our school colors, and added a blue bird picture to the front for our school mascot.<br />
<br />
Inside, I included a page for the kids to write some information about themselves. Not only will this help to prevent lost books, but it provides the kids with a writing opportunity.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tXFkmU912h0/TfQITvmv3tI/AAAAAAAABnI/OiXITpq_jXU/s1600/IMG_1360a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tXFkmU912h0/TfQITvmv3tI/AAAAAAAABnI/OiXITpq_jXU/s400/IMG_1360a.JPG" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
They have this entire last week of school to use their books with their friends, and I included 40 pages, which gives them enough space to get autographs from all of their classmates as well as friends from other classes too!<br />
<br />
